The History
Old Park house has a long and convoluted history, which can be traced back to as early as the 1480’s. It witnessed the Abbey falling victim to Henry VIII’s enforced closures in the 1530’s and became the ancient family mansion of the Hill’s of Attingham. Having survived the Great Good Friday Fire that ravaged Abbey Foregate in 1774, the house evolved from a private residence to an Inn from as early as the 1720’s.
Located on Horsefair, one of the oldest markets of the town, Old Park House would have been the first prominent building on the approach into Shrewsbury from London. The house’s history remained one of public use, moving from an Inn to a Labour Club, until, finally in 2000, the property was separated into two separate private dwellings.
We now own both the older western side of Old Park House, with it’s fantastic original oak staircase, large fireplaces and timber frame, as well the remarkable 17th century Eastern wing, with it’s regionally unparalleled exterior brickwork. Joining together once again one of Shrewsbury’s most unique buildings, with views over-looking what can only be described as our breath-taking Benedictine Abbey (founded 1080). Shrewsbury Abbey is also home to the fictional Brother Cadfael
